3D Printing in Schools: Free Classroom Project Ideas
3D printing in schools works best when the print is tied to a lesson. Every project below uses free models you can download from the Amiko Labs library and print on a single classroom printer.
Six classroom projects to start with
Print a human organ for anatomy class
Biology
Students hold a heart, lung or kidney model in their hands instead of looking at a flat diagram. Print one per table group and let students label the parts with dry-erase markers.
Build a DNA double helix as a group
Biology
Split the model across the class so each student prints or assembles one segment, then join the segments into one long helix along the classroom wall.
Molecule kits for chemistry lessons
Chemistry
Print reusable atoms and bonds so students can assemble water, methane and carbon dioxide themselves โ cheaper than a shop-bought kit and easy to reprint when a piece goes missing.
Tactile maps and landforms for geography
Geography
Height-exaggerated terrain tiles make mountains, valleys and river basins obvious by touch. These also work well for visually impaired students.
Simple machines for physics

Gears, levers, pulleys and ramps students can actually turn and pull. Pair each print with a short measurement task so the lesson stays hands-on.

Print nets and solids so students can compare volume and surface area by filling them with rice or water โ an easy first print for a new school printer.
How to run a project in one lesson
- Pick a model from a subject page and download the STL or 3MF file.
- Slice it the night before โ most classroom models print in 1โ4 hours.
- Print one model per table group so every student can handle a copy.
- Give students a task with the print: label it, measure it, or assemble it.
