3D Printing Lesson Plans: Free Curriculum Guide for Teachers

Each lesson plan below pairs a free printable model from the Amiko Labs library with a learning objective, a lesson flow and a way to assess it — so a 3D print becomes part of the curriculum rather than a one-off activity.

Exploring molecular structures

Chemistry · Grades 8–11 · One 50-minute lesson

Objective: Students explain why molecular shape determines properties like polarity, using printed atoms and bonds they assemble themselves.

  1. Print reusable atom spheres and bond connectors from the Chemistry subject page (about 2 hours of print time for a class set).
  2. Open with a 10-minute recap of covalent bonding and electron pairs.
  3. In pairs, students build water, methane and carbon dioxide and sketch each shape.
  4. Compare bond angles between groups and discuss why CO₂ is linear but water is bent.

Assessment: Each pair submits labelled sketches with bond angles and one sentence linking shape to polarity.

Human heart anatomy in your hands

Biology · Grades 7–10 · One 60-minute lesson

Objective: Students identify the four chambers and major vessels and trace the path of blood through the heart.

  1. Print one heart model per table group the night before.
  2. Students label parts on the print with dry-erase markers or numbered flags.
  3. Trace oxygenated and deoxygenated blood flow using two colours of string or yarn.
  4. Each group presents one chamber and its job in 30 seconds.

Assessment: Unlabelled diagram quiz at the end of the lesson, five parts to name.

Simple machines and mechanical advantage

Physics · Grades 6–9 · Two 45-minute lessons

Objective: Students measure how levers, gears and pulleys trade force for distance and calculate mechanical advantage.

  1. Print a lever, gear pair and pulley set for each station.
  2. Lesson 1: students record force and distance at each station with a spring scale and ruler.
  3. Lesson 2: students calculate mechanical advantage and plot their results.
  4. Close by predicting the advantage of a gear ratio they have not tested.

Assessment: Data table plus one prediction with reasoning, marked against measured values.

Reading terrain with tactile maps

Geography · Grades 5–9 · One 50-minute lesson

Objective: Students connect contour lines on a flat map to real elevation using a printed 3D terrain tile.

  1. Print a terrain tile of a local or famous landscape with exaggerated height.
  2. Give each group the matching contour map and ask them to align the two.
  3. Students mark the highest point, a valley and a likely river path on the map.
  4. Discuss why settlements appear where they do on this terrain.

Assessment: Annotated contour map with three correctly identified landforms.

Fossils, bones and evidence of evolution

Biology · Grades 9–12 · One 60-minute lesson

Objective: Students compare printed limb bones across species to build an argument for common ancestry.

  1. Print two or three comparable bone models (human, bat, whale forelimb where available).
  2. Students measure and record proportions for each specimen.
  3. Groups sort specimens by similarity and justify their ordering.
  4. Introduce homologous structures and revisit their orderings.

Assessment: Short written claim-evidence-reasoning paragraph using their own measurements.

Building these into a curriculum

  1. Map each plan to a unit you already teach instead of adding a separate "3D printing" unit.
  2. Print once, reuse for years — store class sets in labelled boxes per unit.
  3. Budget print time: most classroom models take 1–4 hours, so slice the day before.
  4. Keep one spare of every fragile part; students will break something.
